Exploring the Benefits of Visceral Therapy After Childbirth

Every organ in your body has a normal amount of movement that allows the body to function properly, and these organs all move and work together as a system. When a women becomes pregnant and the fetus grows, these organs have to move to make room for this. After childbirth, there is a chance that the organs may have trouble getting the normal amount of movement back. Also, a c-section or episiotomy/tear may cause scar tissue that could further impede the mobility of organs. Once there is a restriction, the 'body hugs the lesion' (as is taught by many osteopathic, visceral, and craniosacral educators), and the surrounding organs/ fascia becomes drawn to that restriction; thereby decreasing the surrounding organs mobility as well. It is through this that the body starts to feel pain that may not go away with typical PT if the pain is due to an organ issue. Visceral therapy can be done externally c light pressures. This is an example of light touch having a dramatic impact. The body is smart, so a specific and isolated visceral treatment will be done with light touch, and then the body is going to digest this and finish the process. Typically, visceral is only performed every 3-4 weeks so that your body has enough time to finish processing the previous treatment before anything more is intruduced to your organs. This, paired with pelvic floor physical therapy, can work wonders for women trying to get their body balanced after experiencing pregnancy and childbirth. Come try it out!
